I created Dawg Phonics in 2010 with my rescue dog Phoenix. My main goal has always been to rehome unwanted breeds to veterans as service dogs. Phoenix and I worked with numerous breeds and behaviors through obedience training. Pure breeds, rescues, aggressive (human and canine) and many heartbreaking abuse cases all graduating with confidence and stability.
Together we have changed the lives of over 1200 canines and their families. In the beginning of my career I made the decision to train service dog qualities in all my cases. For in the event of something life changing they could use their current pet for assistance vs finding a new one.
Breaking the barriers of communication between dog and human is my passion. Showing my handlers that is not just a dog, it's much more, it is my life. Being able to take dogs that need rescuing and pairing them with a human who need a stable, reliable and trustworthy companion to have a better quality of life is my dream come true.
Phoenix and I spent many hours in nursing facilities and rehabilitation centers and through my obedience standards he was able to complete and exceed every task asked of him. He immediately picked up on who needed what or who wasn’t interested. The tasks ranged from assisting with physical therapy, activities department and of course lots of cuddling.
I really enjoyed seeing my dog and other students of Dawg Phonics lifting the spirits of the residents and the staff. I would sometimes take other students with me to assist.
Residents would love to work with the dogs and were exceeding their goals as well. Being recognized by Tidewell for donating our time was a real honor.
I have worked closely with Animal Network Inc. in efforts to make our county a no kill county. Donating endless hours at the shelter working with the dogs and the volunteers at our local kill shelter. I was asked to assist in the training of the dogs and volunteers. To better equip them in handling dogs and how dogs communicate. During this time we had decreased numbers of euthanasia significantly.
I was a vendor at a fundraising event I now host called Yappy Hour held at Motorworks Brewery. I brought in Animal Network Inc. for assistance in organizing this event . Working together, raising funds for a variety the local non profits through and event called Yappy Hour. To date we have raised over $60,000.00 for homeless pets. Educating the community on the local nonprofits and their mission in addition to supporting local small business owners we where able to give back to the community.
After working with Manatee County Animal Services, Nates Honor Sanctuary then asked for my assistance. I created a handler manual for the volunteers and staff of both facilities. Working side by side with volunteers teaching them to be a trainer. Doing this increased adoptions because the volunteers understood how to interact with the dogs to encourage good behavior so the dogs were more desirable to potential adopters.
I started training therapy dogs for other therapists and other professionals where the dog could benefit their clients. Which led to personal service training. Phonics has produced many service dogs that are individually trained to perform for one with a disability. Service dogs performing tasks for including physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or mentaldisabilities. Occupational and Physical therapy assistant. Security tasks are also performed by the service dogs upon request of the owner.
I also produced the 1st working Vape dog in St. of FL. detectingTHC and Nicotine. A rescue hound named Sami whois doing amazing things in Citrus School District other than detecting trouble. Impacting students in so many ways it is encouraging others to want to be apart of this new program or at least have a therapy dog on hand.
Phoenix has been featured in 3 local commercials. Two recycling advertisements and a Bradenton Marauders advertisement for licensing and tagging your pet through Manatee County. Phoenix has also played a part in a music video for Just for Girls inc in Palmetto. Which led to Just For Girls Inc. winning the 2018 Giving Challenge.
Phoenix retired in 2019 just before we relocated from the Tampa Area gaining our dream home in Cirtus County. He passed away in 2024. RIP. So now, Athena and I carry on this community effort in assisting as many pets as we can in our community. Showing people what we can offer besides basic obedience.
